Where Wellness Grows: Connecting People, Food, and the Land

At Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Herkimer County, we believe that true community change happens through the simple yet powerful act of coming together. Our work is rooted in the idea that every person—regardless of background or income—has the potential to contribute to a thriving, connected community. This belief is more than just a philosophy; it’s a call to action.

Whether we’re working alongside youth through the 4-H Program, helping families stretch their food dollars through Building Healthy Habits, or supporting access to fresh produce and education through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), our goal is the same: to put knowledge to work for the good of the community. One seed, one conversation, one connection at a time.

Take our Seed to Supper Program for example. This hands-on garden education program helps people learn how to grow food to put meals on their table. But the Seed to Supper Program does more than that. It brings neighbors together, connects us to the land, and reminds us of our shared responsibility to care for one another.

A Simple Strategy for Meaningful Engagement

To truly engage and uplift our community, we focus on three core actions:

Listen Deeply and Show Up Consistently

Engagement begins with trust. We earn it by listening to what matters to people and showing up where they are—at community events, schools, farms, and food pantries. When we take the time to understand each other, we uncover shared values and find ways to work together.

Empower Through Learning and Doing

Knowledge is power—but only when it’s shared. Our programs are hands-on, practical, and grounded in research. From teaching teens leadership in 4-H to helping adults cook nourishing meals on a budget, we empower people by giving them tools they can use today to make life better tomorrow.

Foster Connection with Purpose

Whether it’s growing vegetables or mentoring youth, the work we do connects people to each other, to resources, and to the Earth. In a time when many feel isolated or overwhelmed, these connections are essential. They create a web of support that strengthens individuals and the community as a whole.

An Invitation to Act

We all have a role to play in creating a healthier, more connected Herkimer County. As community members, neighbors, and leaders, we invite you to engage by volunteering, sharing your skills, joining a program, or simply spreading the word.

When we work side by side growing gardens, preparing meals, supporting youth, we’re doing more than just solving problems. We’re building something lasting: a community rooted in care, purpose, and shared responsibility.
